PrayForPuertoRico: Impact Of Hurricane Maria Could Take Out Power For Months – Governor Says

Hurricane MariaHurricane Maria subsided to a Category 2 storm after battering Puerto Rico as a powerful Category 4 with sustained winds of 155 MPH. However, forecasters say it’s believed the storm will strengthen and could become a major hurricane again by Thursday.

Officials say the entire island of Puerto Rico is without power just hours after the huge storm made landfall. Puerto Rico Office of Emergency Management Agency says anyone who has electricity is using a generator.

Residents there had been preparing for the worst after Maria battered the Caribbean Tuesday as a Category 5 storm, killing at least 7 people on the island of Dominica.

Millions are still reeling from hurricane Irma in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, earlier this month as Hurricane Maria hits. Gov. Ricardo Rosselló told CNN on Wednesday night that the hurricane took such a severe blow on Puerto Rico that power could be out for months.

“It depends on the damage to the infrastruacture,” he said. “I’m afraid it’s probably going to be severe. If it is … we’re looking at months as opposed to weeks or days.”

The “monster” storm was the strongest to hit the US territory in nearly a century. It made landfall in Puerto Rico at 11.15am BST in the southeast coastal town of Yabucoa and punished the island with life-threatening winds that have torn off roofs and sent doors flying from hinges.

US President Donald Trump described Hurricane Maria as a “monster”, adding: “Our hearts are with you.”
