– 400 Churches Burnt In India Amid Ongoing Violence In India

Christians in northeast India are under attack as a violent conflict between two ethnic groups continues to cause civil unrest. 60 Christians were found dead and over 400 churches burnt in India.

It was reported that the predominantly Hindu Meitei community — Arambai Tengoll, also known as “black-shirts,” and Meitei Leepun — were alleged to be responsible for the violence.

Earlier this month, violence broke out at the Imphal Valley and Churachandpur, resulting in at least four days of agony.

The violence was sparked over plans by the government to give privileged status to the Hindu majority Meitei community in the Imphal Valley region. The Kuki community, who reside on the hills of the Churachandpur district, opposed it.

According to news reports, 1,000 weapons and 10,000 rounds of ammunition were looted from Manipur Police Training College, two police stations, and a battalion camp in the Imphal region recently, but have since been retrieved.

Due to this fight, a lot of casualties as been recorded. A minimum of 73 souls were dead, while 200 people injured. More than 1,700 residences suffered damage, and saw their homes set ablaze. This break out has forced about 50,000 individuals to abandon their homes, of whom roughly 35,000 belong to Christian tribal communities.

According to the source, over 400 churches and six Christian institutions were destroyed due to the violence. Significantly, these churches primarily served as places of worship for Meitei Christians.
