Rio 2016: “Jesus Did It!!” – Wayde van Niekerk Smashes Michael Johnson’s Record & Acknowledges God

South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk broke Michael Johnson‘s 17-year-old 400m world record to sensationally win Olympic gold at Rio 2016. Haven accomplished such great feat, he took to his social media page and acknowledged that “Jesus did it”.

In a post on his Instagram page that captured his victorious moment, van Niekerk inscribed on the picture the phrase ‘Jesus did it’ then went on to caption the post “Thank you to everyone… GOD IS POWER”.

waydeWayde van Niekerk, who has been described as a devout Christian said he  spent time training for the games in Jamaica , where Usain Bolt, another Gold medal winning sprinter had told him that he was set for great things.

“Usain has been such a huge rock, inspiring me as an athlete. He told me back in Jamaica that, ‘You will break the world record.’ And he came to me after and said, ‘I told you you could do it,’” said van Niekerk.

Van Niekerk not only set a new world record in the 400m, but also became the first South African track athlete to win a gold medal in nearly a century and also the first man to win an Olympic 400m title from lane eight.

Michael Johnson whose record was broken also congratulated the gold medalist sprinter. “It was a massacre,” Johnson said on the BBC. His record time has stood at 43.18 seconds for 17 years before Wayde van Niekerk’s astonishing performance in Rio de Janeiro.


 

In other news, Nigeria’s 200m champion, Divine Oduduru, finished 2nd behind Usain Bolt in the Men’s 200m Heat race at the Olympics today August 16th. Odurudu finished in a record time of 20.34 while Usain Bolt finished at 20.28.
