Sonar's Journal: Am I My Brother's Keeper?

2

SonarHave you wondered why people are becoming less and less of their brother’s keeper, with more focus on the pursuit of earnings almost by any means becoming widespread today? These are crucial questions that only few occasionally pause to ask.

It is no longer strange to hear complaints from workers about the working conditions at their places of work or businessmen and women complaining about the sheer lack of supporting infrastructure, the unemployed are not left out of the equation as they also have stories to tell.

This is because the cost of living is rising and people are striving to meet up with the demands of society at every turn, parents are carried away with the task of providing for their children as well as themselves thereby spending more hours at work and less time with the kids, leaving them at the mercy of social media and other unhealthy external influences.

Our sense of morality has become questionable because people tend to support things that generate income with only a few questioning its legitimacy. All these and more are ongoing regardless of the claim that Nigeria is currently the largest economy in Africa, so we hear.

From the look of things it seems survival is getting the better of everyone, so what is survival? It is simply the act of getting by especially in adverse, unusual, extreme or unfavourable conditions placing a hundred percent 100% focus on surviving while ignoring other issues perceived as less important.  Now, what this means is that a lot of the issues perceived as less important in view of chasing what to eat could actually end up being very important things, this is where values such as being your brother’s keeper and other salient issues some bothering on morality, ethics, Humanity etc. falls in. let’s leave Government and Politics out of this and focus on self, what can you and I do to help?

We all face cross-road questions sometimes on a day to day basis, what I mean by the cross-road questions are questions that bother on personal integrity for example; when last did you pause to help someone, I mean really go out of your way to help someone without expecting anything? What if you find yourself on a queue and you are in a hurry, would you jump the queue or wait? Perhaps your utility bill is due and officials are at your meter about to disconnect your power supply, would you try to bribe them if your appeals fail to get you off the black list? This may sound funny but it’s very serious.

I have seen a man arguing with traffic officials after being caught driving against traffic claiming he was in a hurry to get to his wife who was going through labour at the Hospital, of cause he was booked and had to face punishment. There are countless examples of cross-road situations where you are faced with good and evil, if we all do the right things as much as possible regardless of the consequences be it real or perceived, the world will surely be a better place for everyone.

  1. I try to always look for oppurtunities to go out of my way and be a help but our society really doesn’t encourage that. When you get caught in the hustle and bustle of the day, you may forget yourself sometimes.
